Size Guide

A "last" is a hard (typically wood, as shown above), three-dimensional form around which your hand-made Tricker’s shoe or boot is constructed. At Tricker's, we use different lasts depending on the style of shoe we are creating. The last dictates the shape, proportion, fit and character of the shoe or boot. Tricker's lasts have been in existence for decades, and their sizes can therefore be non-standard - this is part of our history and character as England's oldest shoe maker. Here, we're going to help you to determine the correct Tricker's Size for you according to the last or style of your selected shoe or boot, and the size of your foot.

Men's Sizing

Most of Tricker's men’s shoes and boots are true to standard UK men’s sizing. The exception is shoes and boots made on the 4444 last - these come up half a size larger, so if you are normally a UK size 8 (equivalent to EU size 42, US size 9 or Japan size 27), then you would be a Tricker’s Size 8 in most cases, and you would be a Tricker’s size 7½ in any shoe or boot made on the 4444 last, such as a Bourton, Henry, Ilkley or Keswick. The size conversion chart below will help you to select your Tricker's Size. All sizes you select on this website will be Tricker's Sizes - not UK, US or any other sizes. Tricker's Sizes are shown with the shaded background below. Don't forget to check the last, which can be found just underneath each shoe or boot’s name on their respective pages. If it's a 4444 last (Bourton, Henry, Ilkley or Keswick styles), you need to use the second row in the chart. So, select your Tricker's Size according to the last or style of your desired shoe or boot, and your foot length or your known shoe size in your country or region.

Some examples:
  • You know you are UK size 10 and you are ordering a pair of Bourton shoes. Read up from UK size 10 in the conversion chart. Row 2 is for Bourton shoes, so your Tricker’s Size for that order is 9½.
  • You know you are US size 9 and you are ordering a pair of Stow boots and a pair of Bourton shoes. Read up from US size 9 in the conversion chart. Row 1 is for Stow boots, so your Tricker’s Size for the Stow boots is 8. Row 2 is for Bourton shoes, so your Tricker’s Size for the Bourton shoes is 7½.
  • You are not sure of your sizing and you are ordering a Robert shoe.  You measure the length of your bare feet and the longer one is 281 mm.  This lies between 280 and 284 in the bottom row of the conversion chart.  Round your foot length up to the next highest measurement, 284, and read up from 24 in the conversion chart. Row 1 is for Robert shoes, so your Tricker’s size is 10½.
Note that only one number column in the conversion chart is of use to you. It is the column that corresponds to your individual foot sizing.

Tricker's Men’s Width Fittings

Most Tricker's men’s shoes and boots are a Tricker's Width Fit 5. These are suitable for standard width feet. In the UK this standard width is known as an F fitting; in the USA it is known as a D fitting; in other parts of the world, it is known as an M (medium) or R (regular) fitting. If your foot is a standard width, a Tricker’s Width Fit 5 will be suitable.  Our fit is very forgiving and, in a short space of time, your new Tricker’s shoe or boot moulds to your individual foot shape. Some of our styles are a Tricker's Width Fit 6. These shoes are suitable for wider feet. In the UK this wider fit is known as a G fitting; in the USA it is known as an E fitting; in other parts of the world, it is known as a W (wide) fitting.  If a shoe or boot is a Tricker’s Width Fit 6 it will be labelled as such in the product details. If you are unsure whether a shoe will fit, then read your Tricker's size from row 1 or row 2 of the above size conversion chart, depending on the last or style of the shoe you are considering, then use the chart below to find the maximum width of your wider foot according to the Tricker’s Width Fit.

Some of our 5 Fit (standard width fitting) shoes and boots have similar 6 Fit (wider fitting) equivalents. This includes our iconic Stow boot and Bourton shoe ranges:
  • A Malton (6 Fit) is similar to a Stow (5 Fit) in C Shade Tan. The main difference is that the Malton has a Commando sole, whereas the Stow has a choice of leather or Dainite soles.  If you are keen to buy a Stow boot, but have a wider foot, consider the Malton.
  • A Keswick (6 Fit) is similar to a Bourton (5 Fit) in C Shade Tan.  The main difference is that the Keswick has a Commando sole, whereas the Bourton has a choice of leather or Dainite soles.  If you are keen to buy a Bourton shoe, but have a wider foot, consider the Keswick.

We can make any shoe or boot in a Tricker's Fit 5 (standard) or Fit 6 (wide) as a "Made to Order". For example, we can make you a Stow boot in a 6 fit with your own choice of leather, lining, soles and eyelets.
