For SS18, we have given our iconic Bourton brogue for men, Ava Penny Loafer and Anne brogue for women a new and lighter look.
For decades, the men’s heavy country brogue has been our best-seller. Wanting to keep this style fresh, we have launched the Bourton in Funchal burnished leather. The shoe is then finished on a lighter weight Vibram Gumlite coloured sole.
The ladies collection is finished on the classic leather sole.
What is Funchal Leather?
A high quality leather which has a very soft handle and texture. Funchal leather is a perfect leather when wanting to add a burnished finish to the shoe or boot.
What is Burnishing?
If you want to make your footwear look like they are made from old leather, burnishing them will give this desired effect.
A Burnishing Mop’s circular movements, creates a marbled, shaded look to the leather.
An intricate job, you have to make sure just the right amount of pressure and time is applied, otherwise dark patches may appear or not enough texture is produced.
What is a Vibram Gumlite Sole?
Vibram (pronounced “Vee-bram”), was founded in 1937 by Italian Vitale Bramani, who is credited with inventing the first rubber lug sole. Assisted by Pirelli, Bramani patented his invention and launched the first Vibram sole.
Unfortunately, it was born out of tragedy in 1935, after six of his friends died in a climbing accident. Bramani patented the design and later founded the company Vibram that would sell soles around the world. The sole he developed was capable of excellent traction on mixed surfaces. Using vulcanized rubber technology, he developed the Carrarmato design. Even today, it remains one of the most used soles by mountain climbers.
In 1989, Vibram launched Gumlite, a rubber-foam compound. Highly resistant and 30% lighter than traditional rubber which is incredibly soft and comfortable. However, don’t let this fool you into thinking it’s a less than practical sole. Gumlite is exceedingly long wearing and durable.
